A psychedelic drug. Shrooms are eaten fresh, cooked or brewed in a tea. The dried version is sometimes smoked, mixed with cannabis or tobacco. Can also come dried in capsules. Synthetic psilocybin is usually a white crystalline powder that can be made into tablets/capsules or dissolved in water.

Staying Safe

Risks when taking the substance

  • Sometimes a person may experience the negative effects of magic mushrooms and have a ‘bad trip’, which can include unpleasant or intense hallucinations, anxiety, paranoia, panic or fear.
  • Some people who regularly use shrooms may experience flashbacks involving a previous trip.
  • These are usually visual distortions that involve changes in emotions or perception.
  • They can happen weeks, months or even years after the drug was last taken and can be brought on by using other drugs, stress, tiredness or exercise and usually only last a minute or two.

Staying Safe

Harm reduction

  • Avoid using if you feel stressed, anxious/nervous.
  • Avoid using alone, use with people you trust and in a safe/relaxed space.
  • Start small and research safe dose
  • Stay hydrated and have snacks available
  • Wait two hours or so to see effects
  • Don’t use if you have a history of psychosis/delusions/schizophrenia
  • Know how long shrooms stay in your system so you’ll know when it’s safer to drive, be on site or work machinery.
